"To be honest, the most stressful thing for me in the past two years is preparing for the Olympics. As the world's number one athlete, I can't and shouldn't lose. (Whenever I feel like I can't hold on) I keep convincing myself that I've tried very hard." Jiang Minhui, the gold medalist in the women's individual epee event at the Paris Olympics, said in an interview in Hangzhou, Zhejiang on the 14th. Facing the media's camera, Jiang Minhui, who often smiles, choked up when talking about her preparations. This strong champion who overcame heavy pressure and won a reversal on the court showed her emotional side outside the court.
On August 14, the Hangzhou study group of the "Creating Ming Teen Project" from Hong Kong visited the Hangzhou Chen Jinglun Sports School in Zhejiang. Recently, the Hong Kong "Teen Project" study group came to Hangzhou. With the support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, more than 80 Hong Kong youth students visited enterprises, museums, sports and cultural facilities, etc. to perceive the changes in the mainland. On the 14th, the study group went to the Hangzhou Chen Jinglun Sports School. Jiang Minhui, who has officially assumed the position of Assistant Manager of the External Affairs Department of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, attended the event and interacted cordially with students from the sports school and Hong Kong youth students.
Sunny, friendly, and always with a sweet smile... This is the impression Jiang Minhui left on most people at the event. During the event, Jiang Minhui accompanied Hong Kong youth students to interact with young basketball players from the sports school in shooting. Although most students were not proficient in basketball skills, Jiang Minhui still enthusiastically high-fived each student after they finished shooting, and was not stingy with his praise for them.
"I like children very much and hope to bring them joy and hope. I look forward to having more opportunities to accompany children in sports, to give them strength in all aspects, and to help them become strong people," said Jiang Minhui.
Jiang Minhui's tenacity is also an impressive side of her in the Olympic arena. In the women's individual epee final of the Paris Olympics, Jiang Minhui faced the French player Oriane Marlot, who was playing at home, under great pressure. During the game, Jiang Minhui was once behind 1:7, but she relied on her tenacious willpower and skillful skills to catch up and reverse the score to win the championship with a score of 13:12.
When asked by Hong Kong youth students what supported her to complete the reversal, Jiang Minhui said frankly: "I always believe in myself and keep convincing myself that everything is the best arrangement."
In fact, the optimistic and strong Jiang Minhui once suffered a serious injury. In 2017, Jiang Minhui ruptured the cruciate ligament of her left knee during training, which made her miss many major competitions. Later, she used the recovery period to actively adjust her mentality, which also brought new meaning to her future career path. "Because of the injury at that time, I couldn't even walk in the hospital, let alone go to the competition field. This incident made me realize how much I love fencing, and my love for fencing can surpass everything." Jiang Minhui said.
During the event, Jiang Minhui also transformed into a fencing coach and communicated with the young fencing players from the sports school. "I am very happy to see you all today. You also reminded me why I loved fencing so much when I was a kid." During the communication, Jiang Minhui calmed the players' nervousness like an older sister, encouraged everyone with her own experience, and reminded the players to smile more on stage and not to be nervous.
After winning the Olympic gold medal, this "Smiling Queen of Fencing" has received a lot of attention. People have discovered that this world-class fencer is not only proficient in ballet, fencing and other sports, but is also a top student who has studied for a doctorate in law at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
"Every time I hear people say I'm 'perfect', I want to say that I'm not perfect at all. Especially now that everyone has high expectations of me, I feel like I'm not doing well enough. So I have to keep working hard, and hope to be what you think I am," said Jiang Minhui.
In addition to being "imperfect", Jiang Minhui also described himself as "immature" when facing the media. "I have been an athlete and a student all my life, but I feel that I have never really grown up. Although I am 30 years old this year, I am still very immature. I hope that after joining the Hong Kong Jockey Club, I can get familiar with the work as soon as possible and make my own contribution to building a better society."
Talking about the future, Jiang Minhui said that he will actively participate in the exchanges and cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland. "I hope that more athletes and students from Hong Kong will visit the mainland in the future. I also welcome athletes and students from the mainland to visit Hong Kong frequently. I hope that we can use sports as a bridge to enhance mutual understanding."
