Recently, the Chinese Language Education Base of Beijing Foreign Studies University organized the 2024 "Discover China" International Leadership Enhancement Camp Study Tour. More than 80 young people of Chinese descent from seven countries experienced Chinese culture through experience courses and field exploration.
In order to deepen the students' understanding and perception of Chinese culture, this study tour has set up Chinese calligraphy and painting classes and basic Chinese classes. The Chinese class is themed around daily life, folk customs, and traditional festivals, and focuses on catering, shopping, time expression, transportation, etc. Through this kind of teaching close to life, it stimulates students' interest in learning Chinese and improves their ability to use Chinese.
Zhou Chenjie, a student from Italy, said: "In the Chinese class, Mr. Meng Dehong taught Chinese characters in a vivid way, which was very interesting. In the calligraphy class, I personally experienced the unique charm of Chinese calligraphy, which made me feel the charm of Chinese."
The study tour also extended the classroom to universities and science and technology venues in Beijing. The campers visited the School of Mathematical Sciences at Peking University, the Art Museum at Tsinghua University, and experienced the profoundness of Chinese culture at the scenic spots and historical sites in Beijing.
Kim Pepe from Portugal said: "Every moment in the summer camp at Beijing Foreign Studies University was like traveling through a colorful painting of language and culture. Not only did we experience the rich and colorful Chinese culture courses, but we also visited Beijing's scenic spots and historical sites, learned about the long history of China, and saw the rapid changes in Beijing."
In a blink of an eye, it was time to say goodbye, and the students reluctantly said goodbye to Beijing. Zhou Chenjie said: "This study tour left a deep impression on me. I constantly challenged myself and did things that I wanted to do but didn't dare to do before, such as singing and reciting on the stage."
"During the short time we lived together, we introduced each other's lives and local cultures, which made us full of interest in the food, customs and culture of different regions." Zhou Xinya from the UK said, "This study camp not only made me understand and love China better, but also helped me to exercise my ability to live and study independently."
The students said that this experience deepened their love for Chinese culture and their understanding of China, and made them more closely connected with their motherland. (Wu Yixuan)
