On August 15, the higher education evaluation agency Shanghai Ranking officially released the "2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities". The ranking shows the world's leading 1,000 research universities. A total of 203 universities in mainland China were on the list, of which 13 were among the top 100 in the world, an increase of 3 from last year.
Among them, Tsinghua University ranked 22nd in the world and first in Asia. Peking University ranked 24th, Zhejiang University ranked 27th, and Shanghai Jiaotong University ranked 38th. The University of Science and Technology of China (42nd) and Fudan University (50th) entered the top 50 for the first time. Sun Yat-sen University (72nd), Huazhong University of Science and Technology (79th), Nanjing University (82nd), Wuhan University (89th), Central South University (94th), Xi'an Jiaotong University (95th), and Sichuan University (98th) ranked among the top 100 in the world.
Twenty mainland Chinese universities, including Hubei University, University of International Business and Economics, and Lanzhou University of Technology, were included in the list for the first time, showing that the academic level and international influence of Chinese universities are continuing to rise.
Taking stock of the performance of Shanghai universities, there has been another breakthrough this year. A total of 14 universities are on the list, the same as in 2023, ranking fourth in the country (after Jiangsu, Beijing and Guangdong). Shanghai Jiaotong University leads the Shanghai universities, ranking 38th in the world; Fudan University ranks 50th in the world, making it into the top 50 for the first time. The global rankings of Shanghai's twin universities have steadily improved, which also represents the outstanding strength of the country's top universities.
In addition to Jiaotong-Fudan University, other Shanghai universities ranked in the top 500 in the world include Tongji University, East China Normal University, Shanghai University, East China University of Science and Technology, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology and ShanghaiTech University. Tongji University ranks in the top 200 in the world at a stable level, East China Normal University and Shanghai University are ranked in the top 300 in the world; East China University of Science and Technology, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology and ShanghaiTech University are ranked in the top 400 in the world; compared with the ranking in 2023, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology has made an improvement in the ranking range.
Other Shanghai universities on the list include Donghua University, Naval Medical University, Shanghai Ocean University, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Donghua University and Shanghai Ocean University have both improved by one ranking range compared to 2023.
Public information shows that the ShanghaiRanking's Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published by the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2003. It is the first comprehensive global university ranking in the world. It has been published by ShanghaiRanking since 2009 and all rights are reserved.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities is known for its objective, transparent and stable evaluation methods. It uses internationally comparable objective indicators and third-party data, including the number of alumni and teachers who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited scientists, the number of papers published in Nature and Science, the number of papers included in the Web of Science Science Citation Index (SCIE) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), the academic performance of teachers, etc. The Academic Ranking of World Universities ranks more than 2,500 universities worldwide each year and publishes the top 1,000 leading universities.
