As time goes by, the global film market, which was hit hard during the epidemic, has finally slowly returned to normal, and some regions have even performed better than before the epidemic.

According to data released by the French National Film Center last week, the attendance rate of French cinemas in July this year hit the best result since the peak in July 2011, becoming the month with the most moviegoers in the past 13 years. Considering that the Olympic Games opened at the end of July, this performance is even more extraordinary. Moreover, the films that are sought after by the audience are of various types. In addition to Hollywood productions, there are also local productions such as the new version of "The Count of Monte Cristo" and the comedy "Un p'tit truc en plus".

The new version of "The Count of Monte Cristo" won the French box office championship in July.

Back in July 2011, the French people set a record of 20.1 million moviegoers in a single month. The total population of France at that time was about 65 million, which means that one in three people went to the cinema to watch a movie that month. The total number of moviegoers in July this year was not so high, only 18.7 million, compared with the current population of about 68 million in France, in fact, one in four people went to the cinema. However, this data is the best result since August 2011, compared with the same period last year, that is, July 2023, when "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" were fully released in France, there was a 2.2% increase.

In July this year, the highest-grossing film in France was the domestic film "The Count of Monte Cristo". It stood out from a total of 52 films released throughout the month and became the monthly box office champion. The film is adapted from the classic of the same name written by Alexandre de la Batrier and Mathieu Delaporte. Although the director duo Alexandre de la Batrier and Mathieu Delaporte are not prolific, their previous works "The Name Storm" and "The Best Is Yet to Come" have received good reviews. This new version of "The Count of Monte Cristo" has a media score of 3.6 and an audience score of 4.5 (out of 5) on the French film rating website AlloCiné, which shows its popularity. What's more, the story of "The Count of Monte Cristo" has been adapted into the screen many times (the director of the 1979 version was Denis de la Batrier, the father of Alexandre de la Batrier), and it is rare that such a good result can be achieved by rehashing old stories.

Following closely behind The Count of Monte Cristo in terms of box office are the Hollywood animated films Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4. The fourth place is the Marvel superhero film Deadpool and Wolverine. The local film Something Extra, which was released in early May, still received a lot of audience favor in July and ranked fifth. The film tells the story of a father and son robber who use a group of disabled people to escape from the police.

In general, among the films that French audiences chose to pay for tickets for in July this year, local films accounted for 45.4%, while American films accounted for 35.6%. As for the rest of the films other than French and American films, they are relatively unpopular with French audiences. The Chinese film "The River Error" ranked 24th on the July box office list, which is already the highest-grossing overseas film outside the United States.
