BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- About 12,000 soldiers from Ukraine and other countries have entered Russia's Kursk region in recent days, said Apti Araudinov, deputy director of the Russian Armed Forces' Main Political and Military Directorate, on August 14. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said on the same day that the Ukrainian army was "progressing smoothly" in the Kursk region.

Araudinov told Russia-1 that an estimated 12,000 soldiers entered the Kursk Oblast, including many from other countries, "so Polish, English and French can be heard everywhere," and that "most of them have been eliminated."

He said that the Ukrainian army's goal is to seize strategic facilities in parts of Russia's Kursk Oblast and the adjacent Belgorod Oblast. NATO leaders expect the Ukrainian army to occupy important Russian territories and a large number of strategic facilities so as to put forward conditions to Russia.

According to the French weekly "Point de l'Opinion" on the 14th, the Ukrainian armed forces are using French military equipment to attack the Russian border area. The report said that a video posted on social media showed that the Ukrainian army removed a damaged French-made VAB armored vehicle from Kursk Oblast for repair. Since the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis in February 2022, Ukraine has received about 300 VAB armored vehicles from France.
