On August 14, in response to media reports that the fecal coliform concentration at Shenzhen Dameisha Beach exceeded the standard, the relevant departments of Yantian District responded: The main reasons for the fluctuation in water quality at Dameisha Beach are the large number of tourists and continuous heavy rainfall that washes land pollutants, dead branches and leaves from the mountains into the sea.
According to the Yantian Management Bureau of the Shenzhen Municipal Ecological Environment Bureau, the ecological environment department pays close attention to the water quality of Shenzhen Dameisha Beach and closely monitors the water quality of the beach. Water quality monitoring has been carried out twice a week since June, and the monitoring results are promptly disclosed to the public. Between 2021 and 2023, a total of 69 water quality monitorings were completed at Shenzhen Dameisha Beach, with an average excellent rate of 87.5%.
Since 2024, the water quality of Dameisha Beach has fluctuated. There are two main reasons:
Dameisha Beach has a beautiful environment and is open to the public free of charge. It has long been loved by residents and tourists from both inside and outside the city, especially after the opening of the Dameisha subway, which directly leads to the beach. The highest number of tourists per day since this summer has reached 190,000, an increase of 110% year-on-year compared with 2023.
In addition, rainfall has been generally higher than normal this year, with the total rainfall in the region reaching 1,719.3 mm, an increase of 63% over the same period last year (1,057.4 mm). Continuous heavy rainfall will wash land pollutants, dead branches and leaves from the mountains into the sea, causing a certain impact on the water quality of Dameisha Beach.
