Reference News reported on August 15 On August 14, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post published a report by reporter Sylvie Zhuang titled “Xiong’an New Area, the ‘City of the Future’”. The translation is as follows:

Ever since China established the Xiongan New Area seven years ago, there has been a key question surrounding the project: Will it become a futuristic "socialist modern city"?

Xiongan, located about 100 kilometers south of Beijing, is designed to ease population pressure on the capital and accelerate development in surrounding province of Hebei and neighboring port city of Tianjin.

About a decade ago, this land was an open plain dotted with rivers and wetlands, and the local residents formed a small rural society. Today, it is closely connected with the rest of China, both in reality and online. According to official records, central enterprises have established more than 200 branches of various types in Xiongan New Area, and many universities in Beijing will also be relocated here.

I recently visited Xiongan New Area, which takes less than an hour to get there by high-speed rail from Beijing. I saw that most of the urban hardware facilities here are already in place, with office buildings, residential areas, public transportation, schools and kindergartens, shops and restaurants all built and put into operation.

Unlike many major Chinese cities, buildings here are mostly medium-height, and "blue and green spaces" such as parks and lakes account for more than 70% - which is highly unusual for a large city. In addition, there are bicycle lanes on almost every road.
