China and Indonesia hold first senior officials' meeting of foreign ministers and defense ministers of the "2+2" dialogue mechanism

On August 13, 2024, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong and Deputy Director of the International Military Cooperation Office of the Central Military Commission Zhang Baoqun co-chaired the first senior officials' meeting of the China-Indonesia Foreign Ministers and Defense Ministers' "2+2" dialogue mechanism in Jakarta with Kadir, Director General of the Asia-Pacific and Africa Department of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Oktaro, Secretary General of the Strategic Department of the Ministry of Defense. The two sides exchanged in-depth views on strategic cooperation such as China-Indonesia relations, diplomacy and defense, and reached a series of consensus. On the same day, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong also met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno and Deputy Foreign Minister Pahara.
The two sides believe that the "2+2" dialogue mechanism between the foreign ministers and defense ministers of China and Indonesia was established under the care of the two heads of state. It is the first ministerial-level "2+2" mechanism established by China, which fully reflects the high level and strategic nature of China-Indonesia relations. This senior officials' meeting marks the official launch of the "2+2" mechanism between the two countries, and also marks that the strategic mutual trust between the two countries has reached a new level. The two sides highly valued the development of China-Indonesia relations and expressed their willingness to adhere to the strategic guidance of the heads of state, strengthen communication and cooperation, continuously enhance the political and security cooperation and friendship and mutual trust between the two countries, and promote the construction of a China-Indonesia community with a shared future to make new progress.
The Chinese side introduced the situation of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, stating that China will further comprehensively deepen reform, promote high-quality development and high-level opening up, and promote Chinese-style modernization. This will provide new opportunities for China-Indonesia cooperation and the development of regional countries. China also expounded its position on issues involving China's core interests and major concerns, such as Taiwan and the South China Sea. Indonesia congratulated the successful convening of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, reiterated its firm adherence to the one-China principle, and advocated proper management of differences through peaceful negotiations to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea. Both sides stated that they will carry forward the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the Bandung Spirit, jointly uphold true multilateralism, jointly maintain an open and inclusive regional architecture, jointly lead global governance reform and construction, and contribute to maintaining regional and world peace, stability, cooperation and development.
The two sides also exchanged in-depth views on international and regional issues of common concern, such as the Palestinian issue. China pointed out that China advocates a common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security concept and is willing to work with Indonesia to strengthen dialogue, communication, coordination and cooperation around the implementation of the three major global initiatives and jointly safeguard international fairness and justice.
