Uchida Masahiro(1922-2019) was a renowned Japanese artist known for his paper cut-outs and artistic depictions of the beauty of Japan's four seasons. His work was acclaimed in Japan and exhibited internationally.
He died on September 12, 2019 at the age of 97. Shortly before his death, he designed the packaging for Nagatanien's new product "Sea Bream Soup Tea Rice".
His artwork, especially his paper-cut paintings featuring the four seasons, continues to be exhibited in galleries around the world.
Born in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture in 1922.
In 1943, he graduated from the Department of Architecture of Yokohama Higher Technical School (now Yokohama National University).
In 1953, he worked in the public relations department of what is now Kanebo Foods Co., Ltd. (formerly Watanabe Seika).
In 1956, the Institute of Advertising and Art Design was established.
In 1958, he received the Japan Printing Industry Association President's Award (calendar design), and won the award a total of eight times until 1981.
In 1960, he became a lecturer at Yokohama City Adult School.
In 1971, he held a solo exhibition entitled "The Heart of Japan" at the Mitsubishi Gallery, which was themed on paper-cutting.
In 1973, he published the book Paper Cutting Paintings and held a solo exhibition at the Mitsubishi Gallery.
In 1974, he was responsible for the new packaging design of Nagatanien instant miso soup "Asaeda".
In 1975, he published "Poetry of Japan" and was responsible for the new packaging design of Nagatanien instant miso soup "Yuzuki".
In 1976, he was responsible for the new packaging design for Nagatanien instant miso soup "Beard".
In 1977, postcards from the book "Poetry of Japan" were published.
In 1982, he designed the title background for NHK's "Hometown Network" program.
In 1987, he designed the cover for the monthly magazine "Kanagawa" for 9 consecutive years.
In 1989, 141 postcards and silk-screen prints were produced in the "Poetry of Japan" series.
In 1994, "Poems of the Four Seasons" was published.
In 1997, he designed the "Qingyun" TV commercial for Japan Kodo.
In 1999, he designed the cover for PHP magazine until December 2001.
In 2002, he published a collection of his works entitled "Japanese Poetry" and held a solo exhibition at the Asahi Town Furusato Art Museum in Toyama Prefecture, Japan.
In 2003, a commemorative exhibition of the collection "Poetry of Japan" was held at the Yurindo Gallery in Isezakicho, Yokohama.
In 2004, he published "Children's Songs and Singing" co-authored with Sayuri Ikeda.
From 2007 to 2013, he held solo exhibitions in different galleries and venues every year.
In 2014, he participated in NHK's TV programs "Lunchtime Relaxation" and "Tetsuko's Room".
From 2015 to 2018, he continued to publish collections of works and hold solo exhibitions.
In 2019, we designed the packaging for Nagatanien's new product "Sea Bream Soup Tea Rice".
From 2020 to 2023, he will continue to hold solo exhibitions in different locations.
