Israel put its military on high alert amid growing concerns about imminent retaliation from Iran and Hezbollah against Israel, and the Pentagon said the United States was sending a nuclear-powered submarine to the region and speeding up the arrival of a second aircraft carrier.
The Wall Street Journal reported that a person familiar with the matter said that Israel put its military on high alert for the first time this month after observing that Iran and Hezbollah were preparing to launch an attack. Although Israel is not sure whether an attack is really imminent, it is proceeding with caution.
According to the Israeli military, Israeli Military Chief of Staff Halevi approved the plan on the 12th and said that offensive and defensive preparations are underway.
Israeli Defense Minister Galant said, "We are in a phase of alert and preparedness. The threats from Tehran and Beirut may become reality. It is important to explain to everyone that preparation, readiness and alertness are not the same as fear and panic."
A U.S. official said the United States has shared intelligence it has gathered on shifting Iranian military postures, but he stressed that intelligence confirming dynamic military deployments is not enough to determine the timing of potential attacks.
"In terms of what the Israelis might expect to happen, our assessment is consistent with the assessment they released over the weekend," National Security Council spokesman Kirby said on the 12th, referring to "possible actions by Iran and its proxies this week."
U.S. Defense Secretary Austin told Galant in a phone call on the 11th that in light of recent tensions, the U.S. deployment strengthens the U.S. military's military posture in the Middle East and reflects the U.S. "commitment to take all possible measures to defend Israel."
In addition, Axios reporter Ravid quoted sources on social media on the 12th as saying that US Secretary of State Blinken plans to travel to the Middle East on the 13th to respond to the high tensions in the region.
According to Ravid, Blinken plans to stop in Qatar, Egypt, Israel and even Iran. He said, "The trip (to Iran) has not been confirmed because Blinken, like everyone else, is waiting to see if Iran launches an attack."
