He Mukai
(Australia)
Global Wholesale Director, Travelex Group
"My dream is to provide foreign exchange services to more Chinese residents who need to travel abroad, including those living in remote areas."
He speaks fluent Chinese, loves Sichuan cuisine, and likes to check in at Chinese tourist attractions... Australian He Mukai has lived in China for more than 20 years.
He Mukai works for the Travelex Group, which is mainly engaged in monetary financial services. In recent years, the booming Chinese outbound tourism market has made the company a huge success in the Chinese market. "My dream is to provide foreign exchange services to more Chinese residents who have overseas travel needs, including those living in remote areas."
In 1990, when he first came to China, He Mukai fell in love with this country. "I still remember that I went home and told my parents that I hoped to work and live in China one day in the future." He Mukai has been working hard for this dream. In 1996, he went to Nanjing to study, and after receiving a scholarship, he went to Beijing to study economics. In 2003, he chose to settle in Shanghai.
Whether working for a company or as an individual, they are all beneficiaries of China's reform and opening up, which makes He Mukai look forward to the convening of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee. "After reading the communique of the plenary session, I am full of confidence in China's further comprehensive deepening of reform and continuous opening up. I believe that more than 300 reform measures will bring greater opportunities to China and the world."
According to He Mukai, from 2013 to 2014, Travelex Group's business was only to serve inbound customers, but at that time he had seen the rapidly growing outbound tourism market in China. Travelex began to cooperate with the State Administration of Foreign Exchange and the Shanghai Administration of Foreign Exchange. "Our business is very dependent on the two-way flow of cross-border travel. China's outbound tourism is the largest tourism market in the world. The more countries relax visa restrictions on China, the better it will be for our business," said He Mukai.
In 2019, Travelex officially announced the establishment of a new Asia-Pacific headquarters in Shanghai, with Shanghai as the center, radiating to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan and other Asia-Pacific countries and regions, providing exchange services for more than 40 currencies.
After the release of the communique of the Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee, He Mukai found that it particularly emphasized the need to make efforts to make equal rights, equal rules and equal opportunities for foreign investment. The goal is to "create a market-oriented, legal and international first-class business environment, and protect the rights and interests of foreign investment in accordance with the law", and at the same time "improve the system and mechanism to promote and protect foreign investment, improve the foreign investment management service system, and promote international cooperation in the industrial chain and supply chain". He Mukai believes that this is a very important signal, especially for foreign-funded enterprises that have long-term development strategies in China, it is like a "reassurance pill". These reform measures will definitely further attract more foreign investment into China.
With better expectations, He Mukai has more visions for future development. "We are seeking breakthroughs in two things," He Mukai said. One is to cooperate with Chinese banks to further enhance foreign exchange capabilities through their branch network and retail customer base; the other is to promote inclusive finance so that people in small cities can also exchange foreign currencies conveniently and quickly when traveling.
“I have been to almost every province in China, so my personal wish is to enable people in even a small city like Guizhou to obtain foreign exchange as easily as in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai. Through China’s top banks, express delivery to door-to-door service - that’s what we want to do in the future!”
