"Do you know that November 11th of every year is the day when the People's Air Force was founded? This day is also the Air Force Day, the birthday of the People's Air Force." On the afternoon of August 12, the auditorium of Beijing Yanqing No. 1 Middle School was packed. More than 700 freshmen who were undergoing military training wore military training uniforms and listened to a lecture on "Military Aircraft and the Secrets of Modern Air Combat" by Professor Chen Hong of the Air Force Command College.
The reporter learned that this event is also part of the "2024 Scientists' Spirit into Campus" series of activities hosted by Beijing Science and Technology Education Center (Beijing Association for Science and Technology Party School).
Learn about aircraft models and listen to pilot stories

In the lecture, Chen Hong introduced various types of military aircraft and told stories of pilots flying fighter jets. "When pilot Li Feng was training with our J-10 fighter jet, the aircraft suddenly broke down. Facing the commander's order to parachute to escape, Li Feng was reluctant to abandon our expensive fighter jet and decided to use his skills to glide and land in the air." Chen Hong held a fighter jet model and demonstrated to the students the dangerous situation the pilot was facing at the time by making the fuselage fall and the nose rise.
“This kind of operation is a life-threatening one. The pilot needs to precisely control the angle of the nose of the plane so that the plane can land accurately on the runway of the airport several kilometers away. Such precise operations are no longer something that can be calculated by a computer. And our pilot completed this precise unpowered forced landing of the fighter jet on this malfunctioning plane. He himself also crossed the threshold of life and death in the air.” Chen Hong’s moving narration shocked the students present and made them feel the responsibility, courage and commitment of the pilots.
In addition, Chen Hong also guided the students to think about the relationship between war and peace. With the development of aircraft technology, the world has become more closely connected and has become a "global village." At the same time, the existence of aircraft has also made the power of military destruction in war more powerful, leaving people's homes in tatters. "A military expert once said that war will not disappear because of the good wishes of kind people for peace. In many cases, war must be stopped by war, so we must study war. You can think for yourself whether this makes sense."
"Will our country develop large military transport aircraft in the future?" "What is a stealth aircraft? What is its principle?" During the question-and-answer session, the "military fans" at the scene seized this rare opportunity to ask Teacher Chen questions. Chen Hong felt very pleased to hear that the students were so interested in fighter jets.
Chen Hong told the students that the so-called stealth aircraft is to use a variety of means to reduce the amount of information in the radar echo, so that the aircraft can achieve a certain degree of stealth effect. For example, the aircraft can be made streamlined to reduce the radar spectrum; or the aircraft can be made angular to consume the radar energy through the rapid refraction of the vertical tail; or the use of absorbing materials can absorb the radar spectrum... "Currently, this technology can only be achieved by the United States, Russia, and our Chinese J-31 light stealth fighter. I hope that the students can contribute to China's armed forces in the future."
National defense education gives freshmen a new feeling about military training
The reporter found that after the lecture, the students of Yanqing No. 1 Middle School also had a new feeling about the ongoing military training. "After listening to the lecture, I feel proud of my country. Military training is actually an opportunity to exercise my willpower. I believe that after the military training, I will gain greater growth." said freshman Zhao Yaohan.
"I think that people's willpower may sometimes be more important than weapons and equipment. The performance of weapons and equipment is not the only criterion for measuring whether a war can be won. The faith of soldiers in a country is also an important factor in whether a war can be won. So I think that although military training is very tiring, it is also a very meaningful education that allows the whole nation to cultivate group consciousness and faith in the motherland." said freshman Zhang Ruixuan.

Chen Hong said that military science popularization, like military training, is national defense education for young people, and is very important for young people. "Through military science popularization, we first want to let students understand the forefront of the development of world military technology. Historically, the most cutting-edge technology was first used in the military field. In addition, in addition to learning mathematics, physics and chemistry, students should also understand what happened in the sky. Wars, weapons, peace, and development are all written in the sky. At the same time, students should also pay more attention to what is happening in the world and understand the changes in the world."
In the development of the world, in addition to the research and development of high-tech weapons, there is another very important thing, that is, to build a modern people's army and cultivate the Chinese military spirit under the leadership of the Party. "Even the most advanced weapons need highly qualified people to operate them. Only when people and weapons are combined can there be the greatest combat effectiveness," said Chen Hong.
