"My child is on summer vacation and came to Beijing to stay with me for a few days. I didn't expect that he would cause such a big disaster." Looking at the bedroom that has become a ruin, Ms. Zhang, who rents an apartment in Chaoyang District, Beijing, has a complicated expression.
On the morning of August 7, Ms. Zhang's youngest daughter played with fire with a lighter and caused a fire. The older daughter was choked awake and hid in the bathroom with her younger sister. Fortunately, the two trapped children were rescued by firefighters in time and are not injured. Firefighters reminded that during the summer vacation, parents must educate their children not to play with fire.
Two girls trapped in bathroom
At around 7:00 a.m. on August 7, the 119 Command Center received a report that a fire broke out on the third floor of a rental apartment in Jinzhan Township, Chaoyang District. The Chaoyang District Fire Rescue Brigade immediately dispatched rescue forces to the scene to deal with the situation.
"The first team to arrive at the scene was led by members of the Dongyao small fire station who evacuated people from the building, and the apartment managers assisted in counting and verifying the residents." Zhu Song, instructor of the Louzizhuang Fire Rescue Station, said that when he led his team to the scene, he saw an adult man calling for help from a window on the third floor. Just as he and his team members were preparing to put out the fire and rescue people, a mother grabbed Zhu Song.
"My two daughters haven't come down yet. They just called me and said they are still on the third floor!" The mother was extremely anxious.
Zhu Song's heart tightened. "Can I still get through on the phone? Let me video chat with them. Quick!"
"Where are you two now? Is there any smoke outside the door?" After the mobile video was connected, Zhu Song learned that the two children were hiding in the bathroom, which was already filled with thick smoke. "Close the door tightly, don't come out, don't be afraid, uncle will go up to rescue you."
A group of firefighters set up a 15-meter metal ladder and rescued a man who was calling for help from the third-floor window. Another group of firefighters entered the building to put out the fire and search for two trapped children.
Inside the building, through the thick black smoke, the firefighters found the two girls in the bathroom of the room on fire on the third floor, and immediately put two oxygen breathing masks on them. After that, the firefighters safely rescued the two girls downstairs, and neither of them was injured. "We were relieved to see that the two children were fine," said Zhu Song.
How did the fire start? How did the two children get trapped? In the subsequent investigation into the cause of the fire, the children's mother, Ms. Zhang, told the truth.
Girl plays with lighter and sets bedding on fire
Ms. Zhang works in Beijing and rents an apartment on the second floor. Her 14-year-old eldest daughter and 6-year-old youngest daughter both go to school in their hometown in Hebei. During the summer vacation, the two children came to Beijing to visit their mother, and the landlord lent a bedroom on the third floor to the two children for sleeping.
"It was less than 7 o'clock that morning when I was cleaning the room on the second floor and received a call from my eldest daughter, saying that there was a fire and she and her sister were hiding in the bathroom."
Ms. Zhang ran to the third floor in panic, but the third floor was filled with smoke and she could not move. She was then evacuated downstairs. The man who called for help on the third floor was another resident trapped by the smoke. Fortunately, the firefighters arrived in time and rescued Ms. Zhang's two daughters and the trapped residents.
"I was sleeping and was woken up by the smoke," said Ms. Zhang's eldest daughter. Her sister was playing with a lighter beside the bed. She wanted to light a mosquito coil and accidentally lit the paper beside it, which then ignited the bedding and caused the fire. "I wet the blanket and towel on the bed, wrapped my sister, covered my own mouth and nose, and hid in the bathroom."
Zhu Song said that fortunately the two children did not escape blindly. Although the fire area was only 5 square meters, the power was not small. Not only did it burn a hole in the floor, but the smoke was also very large. Once inhaled, it could easily cause suffocation and poisoning.
"It is worth noting that parents must educate their children not to play with fire." Zhu Song reminded that it is summer vacation now, and parents as guardians must always tighten the safety string, keep children away from power sources and fire sources, and establish the correct concept of escape. "Life is only once, don't take chances."
