At around 7:00 a.m. on August 7, the 119 Command Center received a report that a fire broke out on the third floor of a rental apartment in Jinzhan Township, Chaoyang District. The Chaoyang District Fire Rescue Brigade immediately dispatched rescue forces to the scene to deal with the situation.
"The first team to arrive at the scene was led by members of the Dongyao small fire station who evacuated people from the building, and the apartment managers assisted in counting and verifying the residents." Zhu Song, instructor of the Louzizhuang Fire Rescue Station, said that when he led his team to the scene, he saw an adult man calling for help from a window on the third floor. Just as he and his team members were preparing to put out the fire and rescue people, a mother grabbed Zhu Song.
"My two daughters haven't come down yet. They just called me and said they are still on the third floor!" The mother was extremely anxious.
Zhu Song's heart tightened. "Can I still get through on the phone? Let me video chat with them. Quick!"
"Where are you two now? Is there any smoke outside the door?" After the mobile video was connected, Zhu Song learned that the two children were hiding in the bathroom, which was already filled with thick smoke. The man who called for help on the third floor was another resident trapped by the smoke. "I was sleeping and was woken up by the smoke," said Ms. Zhang's eldest daughter. Her sister was playing with a lighter beside the bed. She wanted to light a mosquito coil and accidentally lit the paper beside it, which then ignited the bedding and caused the fire. "I wet the blanket and towel on the bed, wrapped my sister, covered my own mouth and nose, and hid in the bathroom."
