Huang Xuemei said, "I came from Zhaotong, Yunnan, and I didn't see a 400-meter track until I was a senior in high school. At that time, among the nine districts and counties in Zhaotong, only one was not a poverty-stricken county. We only knew how to get out of the mountains through studying. I had good grades and everyone thought I would get a doctorate, but I never thought about doing sports.

When I was studying at Southeast University, I was spotted by the coach of the school's orienteering team and used my spare time to practice long-distance running. After graduating from university, I came to Xiamen and a colleague at work asked me if I wanted to participate in the Xiamen Marathon. That's when I started my relationship with the Xiamen Marathon.

I was busy with work in the first two years and didn't run many marathons. Later, when I became more proficient in my work, I slowly picked up long-distance running. I tend to be low-key.My company knew I could run a marathon, but they didn’t know I was that good. After the Beijing Marathon, there was so much media coverage that I couldn’t hide it anymore. My company also set up a running club because of me, but I only do long-distance running after work.”

When asked whether she would become a professional athlete, Huang Xuemei said that she was not suitable for the professional path because of her age. It is good to run casually like now, without pressure and without constraints. If I have to work overtime, I will run before work; if I don’t have to work overtime, I will run in the evening after get off work. I don’t like to make running a career. I prefer to use running to relieve the pressure at work after work. This way of running is more suitable for me.
