[Text/Observer Network Chen Sijia] According to a report by The Times of Israel on August 11, two sources revealed that Israel currently assesses that Iran will launch a retaliatory attack on Israel in the next few days in response to the assassination of Haniyeh, leader of the Political Bureau of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), in Tehran.
Sources said that according to the latest Israeli intelligence assessment, there are still differences within the Iranian government on how to respond to the assassination of Haniyeh. The new President Pezerhicyan hopes to avoid a "harsh response", but the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps wants to launch a larger-scale attack. Israel predicts that Iran may launch an attack before the resumption of the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza on the 15th.
One of the sources said the situation remained fluid as Iran had not yet resolved those differences.
The report also mentioned that Israeli Defense Minister Galant had spoken with US Defense Secretary Austin on the 11th. Galant told the US that Iran's ongoing military preparations indicate that Iran plans to launch a "large-scale attack" on Israel.
On July 31, local time, Hamas Political Bureau leader Haniyeh was killed in an attack in Tehran after attending the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian president. Both Hamas and Iran accused Israel of launching the attack and vowed revenge.
According to the Islamic Republic News Agency of Iran, Ali Mohammad Naini, spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran, said on the 11th that the assassination of Haniyeh in Tehran was a blatant violation of the UN Charter and that Iran would respond to Israel's "stupid behavior" at the "appropriate time".
Naini criticized Israel for trying to weaken the deterrence of the "resistance front" by assassinating the commander of the resistance movement and diverting attention from the failure of the Israeli army in the Gaza war. He pointed out that Israel is "terrified" of Iran's retaliation and the assassination of Haniyeh will further push the Israeli occupation forces to the "brink of collapse."
Earlier, Ali Fadavi, deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, also said on the 9th that Iran will carry out the orders of Supreme Leader Khamenei to "severely punish" Israel. Fadavi said: "The Supreme Leader's orders to severely punish Israel and avenge Haniyeh are clear and unambiguous... These orders will be implemented in the best possible way."
IRNA reported on the 11th that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is currently conducting military exercises in western Iran, which are expected to last until local time on the 13th. An Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps official revealed that the military exercise, which began on the 9th, aims to "strengthen the vigilance of combat readiness."
Hamas issued a statement on August 6, announcing that Hamas' leader in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, will replace Haniyeh as the leader of Hamas's Political Bureau.
Sinwar is considered by the outside world to be a representative of the "hardliners" within Hamas, and is also accused by Israel of being the planner of the "Al-Aqsa Flood" operation on October 7 last year. A regional diplomat familiar with the ceasefire negotiations in the Gaza Strip told Reuters that this appointment means that if Israel wants to resolve the conflict, it must face Sinwar, "This is a tough message and there is no room for compromise."
