On August 11, local time, King Abdullah II of Jordan met with a visiting delegation of US congressional assistants. The two sides discussed issues such as the development of the regional situation.
Abdullah II said that every effort must be made to ease regional tensions and promote a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to prevent the situation in the Middle East from getting out of control and sliding into a regional war. He stressed that as long as the conflict in Gaza continues, the region will continue to face the risk of expanding the conflict and regional stability will be threatened, so international efforts must be strengthened to promote a ceasefire in Gaza.
He reiterated that no one would be allowed to use Jordan as a battlefield and that Jordanian lives would not be allowed to be threatened.
He stressed that a political prospect must be found to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, which is the only way to ensure security for Palestinians, Israelis and the entire region. He also stressed that the international community must continue to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East to enable it to provide humanitarian services to millions of Palestinians in the region in accordance with its UN mandate.
Members of the U.S. Congressional Assistants delegation expressed appreciation for Jordan's key role in achieving regional peace and stability.
During the visit to Jordan, the U.S. Congressional Assistant Delegation also held consultations with Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs Safadi on relevant issues.
