The number of births in Germany continues to decline. According to data recently released by the German Federal Statistical Office, 692,000 babies were born in Germany in 2023, a decrease of 45,000 newborns compared with 2022, a decrease of 6%.

The data shows that in 2023, each woman gave birth to an average of 1.35 children, while in 2022, each woman gave birth to an average of 1.46 children, equivalent to a 7% drop in the fertility rate. Statisticians explained that the number of children born per woman in Germany has been declining since 2017, and the downward trend has been particularly evident in the past two years.
Last year, the average age of mothers at childbirth in Germany was 31.7 years old, and the average age of fathers was 34.7 years old. The Federal Statistical Office of Germany said that this means that the age of mothers at childbirth has slightly decreased compared to 2021 (31.8 years old), while the age of fathers has remained unchanged.
However, the trend over the past decade has shown that parents are getting older when they have their first child. In 2014, the average age of mothers was just 29.6 years old, while the average age of fathers was 32.8 years old.
The decline in fertility is not only seen in Germany. According to Eurostat, fertility rates have fallen in most EU countries. In 2022, the decline was particularly strong in Estonia, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Finland, with a drop of at least 10% compared to 2021. France, Spain, Poland, Hungary and Croatia each saw a drop of 3%. Only Portugal and Bulgaria saw an increase, at 6% and 4% respectively.
