On the evening of August 9, Sun Yat-sen University issued an obituary, saying that Associate Professor Huang Yongyuan of the School of International Translation of the university died in Seoul, South Korea on the same day due to a sudden illness and ineffective treatment. He was 37 years old. On the 11th, Mr. Dong, Huang Yongyuan's roommate during his doctoral studies in South Korea, told Jimu News that Huang Yongyuan came from a rural family in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, and all his expenses during his doctoral studies were supported by scholarships and part-time jobs. He was promoted to associate professor only three years after graduating with a doctorate, and was an "all-round player."
The obituary shows that Huang Yongyuan, male, was born in April 1987 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang. He graduated from Fudan University with a bachelor's degree in 2010, a master's degree from Fudan University in 2013, and a doctorate from Korea University in 2019. In July 2019, he was hired as an assistant professor at the School of International Translation of Sun Yat-sen University. In April 2022, he was promoted to associate professor. His research areas are modern and contemporary history of the Korean Peninsula, history of Sino-South Korean relations, and country and regional studies on the Korean Peninsula. The obituary stated that Associate Professor Huang Yongyuan loved education, was rigorous in his studies, devoted himself to educating people, cared for students, and was humble and pragmatic. In accordance with the wishes of Associate Professor Huang Yongyuan's family, the funeral will be simple and no memorial service will be held.
On August 11, Jimu News contacted Mr. Dong, Huang Yongyuan's roommate during his doctoral studies in South Korea. According to him, Huang Yongyuan went to Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea as a visiting scholar for six months in early March this year and was scheduled to return to China at the end of August. Unexpectedly, Huang Yongyuan suddenly suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and fainted on July 31. He was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment, but the bleeding did not stop and he was later declared brain dead. "I learned the news at 2 a.m. on August 2. I went to the hospital that morning and was told that he was brain dead. The hospital tried to keep his heart beating and waited for his parents to come to South Korea to see him for the last time."
