On the morning of August 8, braving the pouring rain and wisps of mountain fog, a green postal vehicle shuttled along the winding mountain road on the China-Myanmar border.
Starting from the county seat and after an hour and a half of transportation, a college entrance examination admission notice from Yunnan Normal University was delivered to the Lishu villagers' group in Mengga Village, Sudian Lisu Township, Yingjiang County, Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province.
Yu Xianhua, a 19-year-old Lisu girl, excitedly took the heavy notice from the deliveryman. In this year's college entrance examination, she was admitted to Yunnan Normal University with a score of 579, becoming the first student in the village to be admitted to a top university.
The Lishu Village Group in Mengga Village is a Lisu village on the China-Myanmar border. Yu Xianhua, 19 years old this year, is from a family of five. Her parents are farmers at home, and she also has an elderly grandmother and a one-year-old brother. The farthest place she has ever been to is the county seat more than 60 kilometers away.
"My parents are farmers and have not received much education, but they have always attached great importance to my studies. No matter how difficult the family was, they never spared any effort in my studies and taught me to study hard since I was young. From that time on, I made up my mind to get out of the mountains and change my destiny through studying." She, who has never left the mountains, has determination in her eyes.
From primary school to junior high school, the well-behaved Yu Xianhua has always been among the best students in the township. She is a good student with excellent character and academic performance. After graduating from junior high school, she was admitted to Yingjiang County National Complete Middle School and started her high school life.
"When I first arrived at high school, I was not used to it and had a hard time studying. I was very anxious and I still remember crying when I called home. I also thought about giving up. A teacher told me that if I do what I want to do, I will definitely become the person I want to be. This sentence also gave me great confidence and motivation to keep going. I adjusted my study methods and devoted more time and energy than other students. With the encouragement of my parents and the help of my teachers, I survived the most difficult first year of high school and my academic performance gradually caught up. I believe that as long as I persist and work hard, there will be no difficulties that cannot be overcome."
“In a few days, I will go to the post office to send my luggage to the school, so that I will feel a lot more relaxed on the road. After I get familiar with the situation, I will take my parents and younger brother to Kunming next year to see the world outside the mountains.” Yu Xianhua is both excited and a little nervous about her future university life.
Yu Xianhua is a hard-working student and a sensible child. This summer, she opened a tutoring class in the village to help primary school students in the village with their homework for free. When the deliveryman arrived, she was teaching students to practice the pronunciation of initials and finals.
"Most of the villagers here are Lisu people, and their Chinese pronunciation is not very standard. I want to use the knowledge I have learned to help the children in the village learn Chinese well." Regarding college life, Yu Xianhua said that she must cherish the hard-won learning opportunity, learn professional knowledge well, and return to her hometown to make contributions in the future. A sword is sharpened by grinding, and the fragrance of plum blossoms comes from the bitter cold. Yu Xianhua is applying for a student loan these days. In half a month, she will embark on a study trip to Kunming.
