Reference News reported on August 11 According to Yonhap News Agency on August 11, as the global market for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a core component of artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators, grows rapidly, the scale of South Korea's memory chip exports to Taiwan has increased accordingly.

South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea International Trade Association said on the 11th that South Korea's memory chip exports to Taiwan in the first half of this year amounted to US$4.26 billion, a year-on-year increase of 225.7%, far higher than the growth rate of South Korea's overall memory chip exports (88.7%). Since 2018, Taiwan has been South Korea's fifth largest memory chip export destination, and in the first half of this year it became the third largest export destination.

According to the report, industry analysts believe that as the semiconductor supply chain changes with the development of the AI industry, South Korea's memory chip exports to Taiwan will increase accordingly.

In the past, South Korea's memory chip exports to Taiwan were mainly dynamic random access memory (DRAM) used by local companies to manufacture information and communication technology products. A considerable part of the export increase this year may be related to the HBM supplied by SK Hynix to Nvidia. Nvidia commissioned TSMC to produce graphics processing units (GPUs) for AI accelerators. TSMC's packaging plant in Taiwan packaged the previously produced GPUs together with HBMs produced by SK Hynix and Micron Technology and then supplied them to Nvidia.
