Looking from a high place, the public scientific research dock of Nanshan Port in Sanya, Hainan, is backed by Nanshan Mountain and faces the South China Sea, shaped like a crescent. This is the closest port in my country to the thousand-meter deep sea area, only 164 kilometers away. It only takes half a day for the scientific research ship to leave the port and reach the deep sea.

On July 1, the Haiyang Shiyou 546 research vessel docked at the public research wharf of Sanya Nanshan Port, marking the official start of trial berthing of my country's first public research wharf. As of August 10, it has served 199 research vessels.

Recently, the reporter came here and saw that the China Ocean University's new deep-sea comprehensive scientific research training ship "Dongfanghong 3" had completed replenishment and was parked at a new berth. In the cabin, laboratory director Song Zhenjie was busy debugging equipment for the sea.

This is not Song Zhenjie's first visit to Nanshan Port. "In 2020, Nanshan Port was still a cargo terminal with only two cargo berths. When we first docked here, we had to go around the cargo yard to leave the port." Song Zhenjie pointed to the old berth hundreds of meters away, looked around the new berth, and continued, "Now it can be changed! There are dedicated scientific research berths, warehouses and test sites. You can walk a hundred meters to go out of the port to buy supplies, and the lights outside the port are bright."

The change began in 2019, when the Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City Administration was officially established and began to make efforts in the field of deep-sea science and technology. In 2020, the Overall Plan for the Construction of Hainan Free Trade Port was issued, requiring the cultivation of deep-sea and deep-space industries. In the same year, Nanshan Port clarified its positioning as a "scientific research home port".

The transformation and upgrading of Nanshan Port is imperative.

In 2021, the construction of the Sanya Nanshan Port Public Scientific Research Wharf officially started and was completed and accepted in May this year. Shen Yue, marketing director of Sanya Nanshan Port Wharf Co., Ltd., introduced that at present, the main part of the public scientific research wharf project has been completed, with a berth length of 278 meters, which can accommodate the largest scientific research vessels in the country. In addition, the wharf has a 130-meter-long security berth and a 65-meter-long launch slide, which can pull the scientific research vessel to the shore for maintenance work. The total new berth shoreline is 460 meters.
