1. Basic Overview of the Industry

A centrifugal compressor is a type of compressor, also called a "vortex compressor", which consists of a rotor, a stator and bearings. The structure and operating principle of a centrifugal compressor are similar to those of a centrifugal blower, but it is always multi-stage, which can enable the gas to obtain a higher pressure, a larger processing capacity and a higher efficiency.

Centrifugal compressors can be generally classified into three types according to their structural form: horizontal split type, barrel type and multi-axis type. Among them, the horizontal split type centrifugal compressor has a horizontal center plane that divides the cylinder into two halves, upper and lower, which are connected by bolts at the center plane. This structure is easy to disassemble and assemble, and is suitable for medium and low pressure occasions.

The barrel compressor has two layers of cylinders, the inner and outer cylinders. The outer cylinder is a barrel with end covers at both ends. The inner cylinder is split vertically and pushed into the outer cylinder after assembly. This structure has high cylinder strength, good sealing and good rigidity, but it is difficult to install and inconvenient to repair. It is suitable for high pressure or occasions requiring good sealing.

The multi-shaft centrifugal compressor is a gearbox in which a large gear drives several small gear shafts. One or both ends of each shaft are equipped with a first-stage impeller. The impeller takes in air axially and discharges air radially. The impellers of each stage are connected by pipes. This type of compressor has a simple structure and a small size, and is suitable for compressing medium and low pressure air, steam or inert gas.

Centrifugal compressors are widely used in various process flows to transport air, various process gases or mixed gases and increase their pressure. In industry, they are often named according to their purpose or type of gas, such as blast furnace blowers and ammonia centrifugal compressors.
