GfK data shows that PlayStation 5 has sold 4 million units in the UK so far.

This is the ninth console to achieve this sales figure in the UK, but it took 31 weeks (approximately 7 months) longer than the PS4.

It is the fifth fastest-selling console in the UK, despite being much more expensive than previous consoles. For example, the PS1 (number 4) had fallen to £129 after 76 weeks of sales, and was priced below £100 when it reached 4 million terabytes of sales.

In terms of revenue, the PS5 has generated more than any other console at this point in sales, with just under £1.85 billion, compared to £1.26 billion for the PS4.

The Nintendo Wii was the fastest console to reach 4 million units sold, tied with the PS5 for 1 million units sold, and the fastest to reach 2 million and 3 million units sold. The console was first sold for £180, and three years later it cost £140.

Dorian Bloch, head of gaming at GfK, said: "The generation of consoles that were sold at prices that were almost impulse buys has come to an end. The Wii, PS1, PS2 and Xbox 360 all had lower cumulative average selling prices when they reached 4 million units, both from launch and with significant price cuts as they retired."

Here’s how long it took for consoles to reach 4 million units sold in the UK:
