In October 1934, after the main force of the Central Red Army began the Long March, Chen Yi and Xiang Ying led the remaining troops to continue guerrilla warfare.

Compared with the Long March, those who stayed behind were actually in greater danger. Even Chen Yi was almost arrested several times. Fortunately, the corruption in the Kuomintang army saved him.

In April 1935, Chiang Kai-shek learned that the guerrillas led by Chen Yi were at the border of Jiangxi and Guangdong, so he sent tens of thousands of people to encircle and suppress them, determined to capture Chen Yi alive.

Under the enemy's encirclement and suppression, the Red Army guerrillas were quickly defeated. Chen Yi escaped with only one guard and hid in the reeds in a roadside ditch.

Soon, the enemy's search team arrived. It was a whole company. If they launched a search, Chen Yi and his guards would definitely be in danger!

However, a strange yet not strange phenomenon occurred.

Why do we say so? We say it is “strange” because it is beyond everyone’s imagination and should not happen in most troops; we say it is “not strange” because this is a Kuomintang army and everyone has become accustomed to it.
