[Text/Guocha.com Zhang Jingjuan] Mexico recently invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the inauguration ceremony of the country's elected president Claudia Sheinbaum, but was opposed by Ukraine. The Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico even asked the Mexican government to arrest Putin.

According to Reuters, on August 8 local time, the Mexican president rejected Ukraine's request. Mexican President Lopez said at a regular press conference, "We can't do this."

Sheinbaum's inauguration will be held on October 1. Juan Ramon de La Fuente, who will serve as foreign minister in Sheinbaum's government, said it was "standard diplomatic protocol" to invite leaders of countries that have diplomatic relations with Mexico to attend the presidential inauguration.

Russia and Mexico have been strengthening their bilateral relations. Putin also congratulated Sheinbaum on her election win in June, praising Mexico as Russia's "traditional friendly partner" in Latin America.

According to a previous announcement from the Mexican Embassy in Moscow, they have sent an invitation letter to Putin, "The Russian president will decide whether to attend in person or appoint other senior officials to attend on his behalf."
