Cai Peilin from the Chinese University of Hong Kong is a member of the Hong Kong internship team of the 2024 "100 Schools and 1,000 Talents" internship program and the "Wings Plan" action. This summer internship is Cai Peilin's first time in Dongguan. She is currently a junior majoring in urban studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She took advantage of the summer vacation to visit Dongguan, a new first-tier city in the Greater Bay Area.
"My previous impression of Dongguan was more of an industrial city, but after a field visit, I found that Dongguan is a very diverse and inclusive city." Cai Peilin told reporters that during her internship, she visited the Dongguan Exhibition Hall, Dongguan Fashion Toys Company and other places, which made her understand Dongguan from many aspects. From the construction of Songshan Lake Science City in Dongguan, we can see Dongguan's encouragement and support for technological innovation in urban planning; from the creation of independent IP images by Dongguan's fashion toy companies, we can see the attitude of Dongguan companies to keep pace with market trends... As her internship in Dongguan deepened, Cai Peilin's impression of Dongguan gradually became more three-dimensional.
At the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Cai Peilin studied professional courses including urban planning and design, urban environment, urban policy and management, and smart cities. Therefore, for this internship, she chose a position at the Dongguan Dongcheng Planning Management Office, which was highly matched with her major and would be able to accumulate more practical experience related to urban planning management.
During her daily internship, Cai Peilin participated in the work related to Dongcheng's "Hundreds of Millions of Projects" and visited Dongcheng Zhouwu Ancient Village, Zhouwu Daoxiang Road, Huangqi Nanxiangyu Corridor, etc. "After understanding the situation on the spot, I saw many ways to revitalize the countryside, which was very rewarding." Cai Peilin said that rural revitalization projects are rarely seen in highly urbanized cities like Hong Kong. At present, Hong Kong is also exploring ways to preserve rural culture in places such as Mui Wo. How to strike a balance between cultural preservation and economic revitalization is a question that she has been thinking about during her internship.
In her spare time, Cai Peilin would go shopping and eat delicious food in Dongguan's business district with her friends. "I heard that the roast goose rice noodles in Dongguan are very good. I look forward to tasting the authentic Dongguan food next weekend." Cai Peilin said.
