For some vehicles covered by this recall, after the trunk lid is unlocked, the trunk latch assembly system may not be able to detect that the trunk lid is unlocked, and the vehicle cannot issue a "front trunk is not locked" prompt. In extreme cases, the trunk lid may be opened while the vehicle is driving, affecting the driver's field of vision, increasing the risk of vehicle collision, and posing a safety hazard.

Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. will use the vehicle remote upgrade (OTA) technology to upgrade the software for vehicles within the recall scope for free. The upgraded vehicles can identify the faulty state of the front trunk latch and issue a text and buzzer prompt of "front trunk is not locked". At the same time, vehicles with faulty front trunk latches will be repaired free of charge to eliminate safety hazards. For vehicles that cannot be upgraded through OTA technology, the Tesla service center will contact relevant users to implement the recall.

The agency believes that this software defect may cause the unlocked hood to open suddenly while driving and block the driver's view, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall involves Model 3, Model S, Model X produced from 2021 to 2024, and Model Y models produced from 2020 to 2024, affecting 1.8496 million vehicles.

It is reported that Tesla has released a car remote upgrade software update to solve this problem. Affected car owners will receive a notification letter from Tesla before September 22, 2024.
