"The Internet is now beyond our imagination. Everyone has the Internet in their pocket, which has brought great convenience to our lives. Thank you all for your efforts in making Internet applications more convenient," said Qian Hualin, researcher and former deputy director of the Computer Network Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.Qian Hualin, born in 1940, had excellent grades since childhood. He majored in computer science in college and was assigned to the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences after graduation. Since 1975, Qian Hualin has been paying attention to the Internet and has devoted himself to the creation and development of China's Internet. In 2024, Qian Hualin was also named "China's Internet 30 Years Tribute Person".
Participated in the creation of China's InternetQian Hualin had a hard life as a child. With excellent grades, he was admitted to university with the help of a scholarship. He studied the most cutting-edge computer science at the time. In 1965, after graduating from university, Qian Hualin was assigned to the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. However, computers were not open to import at that time, so they had to be self-reliant. After 1975, Qian Hualin began to pay attention to the Internet. He went to the United States for a visiting scholar program. In addition to attending some courses, he spent all day in the library."After returning to China, I participated in the construction of the X25 switch and network between China and Germany and made some preparations in this regard. I feel that our country's Internet environment is very good, especially in the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Everyone's needs are very urgent. The Internet is needed for technical exchanges between scientists, publishing articles, etc. The leaders attach great importance to this matter, so when we had this task, we received strong support from the Academy of Sciences." Qian Hualin introduced. In the early days, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other institutions basically needed to exchange information with foreign institutions through paper documents. In the late 1980s, the Internet began to be widely used abroad, and they basically exchanged information through emails. At that time, China did not have the Internet, and researchers could only send files to other countries but could not receive files from the other party. Therefore, China urgently needed to access the international Internet to realize information exchange. At that time, the World Bank had a loan project in China. Originally, the loan did not support engineering projects in the information field. After repeated efforts by all parties, engineering projects in the information field were included in the loan. World Bank experts named the project "China National Computing and Networking Facility (NCFC)", and we called it "Zhongguancun Area Education and Research Demonstration Network".In early 1990, the Chinese Academy of Sciences launched this project, and Qian Hualin served as the technical director of the project. "Everyone is very excited about accessing the Internet. Since the United States did not allow commercial use of the Internet in the early days, we needed national support for China's Internet construction. At that time, departments and leaders at all levels showed great concern and support," Qian Hualin said. After efforts from all parties, on April 20, 1994, the NCFC project was opened through the 64kbit/s international dedicated line connected to the Internet by the US telecommunications operator Sprint, realizing full-function connection with the Internet. my country was officially recognized internationally as a country with truly full-function Internet, becoming the 77th member of the international Internet family, and officially ushering in the Internet era."At that time, the Internet Society published a magazine every quarter, called Newsletter. The third cover of the last page was a colorful world map. Countries with full Internet connections were red; countries that could only communicate via email were yellow; and countries without any network functions were filled in white. All newslets published after April 20 marked China in red," Qian Hualin recalled.China is not only a major Internet country, but also a strong Internet country."I work in computer science, but everything we do in the computer field has a life cycle. We produce results after a period of time, but they are no longer useful after a while. However, since we started working on the Internet, there is no life cycle. We in the scientific research and education circles are working on the Internet, and because the demand is the most urgent, we have become a vanguard team," Qian Hualin believes. He said that my country has a large number of Internet users, the telecommunications sector has become the main force in building the Internet, and Internet users have become the main force in applications, and Internet applications have developed very well. Thanks to various network applications, the Internet can be used anytime and anywhere, and he thanked the main force for their contribution and participation.Qian Hualin also presided over the establishment of China's domain name system and organized a team to conduct research and development of the Chinese domain name system. He was also the first technical liaison for the national top-level domain name CN. He has served as vice chairman of the Internet Society of China, chairman of the Asia-Pacific Top-Level Domain Organization, and chairman of the Chinese Domain Name Federation of the Mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.In 2014, Qian Hualin was selected into the "Internet Hall of Fame" list released by the Internet Society. As the highest honor in the global Internet community, he is the second Chinese to receive this honor after Academician Hu Qiheng, former vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2015, Qian Hualin was shortlisted for the "2014 China Internet Person of the Year" event Person of the Year Award.Qian Hualin said that network information technology is currently the field of technological innovation with the most concentrated R&D investment, the most active innovation, the widest application, and the greatest radiation and driving effect in the world, and is a competitive highland for global technological innovation."The Internet in our country has developed very rapidly, especially the subsequent development into mobile Internet, which has made the Internet convenient for every Chinese citizen. Now it seems that our Internet has also made contributions to the world. Now we are not only a major Internet power, but also a strong Internet power," Qian Hualin believes.
