Recently, the 40th Children's Diabetes Summer Camp was held at Beijing Children's Hospital, National Children's Medical Center. This summer camp is the first children's diabetes summer camp in China. It was founded by Yan Chun, a famous pediatric endocrinologist, in 1984 and is dedicated to helping children with type 1 diabetes learn to manage the disease scientifically. After generations of medical staff from the Department of Endocrinology and Genetics Metabolism of Beijing Children's Hospital have inherited and continued the concept of "peer education" for 40 years, accompanying "little diabetes babies" to grow together, learn to manage diabetes scientifically, and enjoy a normal life.
Type I diabetes is caused by the destruction of pancreatic β cells, which leads to an absolute lack of insulin and requires lifelong insulin treatment. The theme of this summer camp is "Childlike Hearts Flying, Dreams Setting Sail". "Every 'little sugar baby' is an invincible warrior!" At the opening ceremony, Zhao Chengsong, deputy director of Beijing Children's Hospital, said that as a chronic disease, scientific management of childhood diabetes is essential. Over the past 40 years, the activities of the Children's Diabetes Summer Camp have become more and more diverse, but what remains unchanged is the love and care of medical staff for children with diabetes.
40 children with diabetes left their parents to participate in this summer camp. Nearly 20 professional medical staff, nutritionists, and sports coaches provided medical care and protection for the children, closely monitored the blood sugar of the "little diabetic babies" 24 hours a day, and provided timely guidance and adjustments according to specific circumstances.
The summer camp has a variety of exciting expansion activities such as skipping competitions, tug-of-war competitions, super aerobic drums, super obstacle races, "calculating carefully", "happy caterpillars", etc., which allow "little sugar babies" to learn diabetes management skills such as blood sugar monitoring, insulin injections, balanced diet, and scientific exercise in an entertaining way. Through "peer education", "little sugar babies" realize that they are not alone, and have learned to support each other and make progress together with their peers in practice. In addition, a special round-table dialogue was held, in which four "big sugar babies" old campers with an age difference of 20 to 30 years and two parents of children with diabetes shared their growth stories and mental journeys, inspiring every "little sugar baby" and calling on the whole society to pay more attention to and understand children with type 1 diabetes.
Beijing Children's Hospital stated that the hospital's pediatric diabetes medical team will deepen the three-in-one diabetes education and individualized comprehensive management model of "in-hospital education + follow-up management + public welfare activities", continuously enrich the brand connotation of the children's diabetes summer camp activities, and form linkages with diabetic children and their families to benefit more diabetic children.
