[Global Network reporter Suo Yanqi] According to Reuters on the 6th, Meta, the parent company of social platforms Facebook and Instagram, apologized for the "accidental deletion" of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar's social media posts. Previously, Anwar posted on Facebook and Instagram to express condolences for the assassination of Haniyeh, the leader of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) Political Bureau, but the relevant videos and pictures were deleted by the above two platforms, which drew Anwar's condemnation.
Reuters said a Meta spokesman told the media that the company apologized for the "operational error" and added that the relevant content had been restored with a label of "correct news value."
Reuters mentioned that just one day before Meta's apology, Malaysia's communications minister and members of the prime minister's office met with Meta representatives to seek explanations.
According to earlier reports, Anwar posted a video of a phone call with a Hamas official on Facebook and Instagram on July 31, in which he expressed condolences for Haniyeh's assassination. In addition, he also posted a photo of his last meeting with Haniyeh in Qatar in May, with a eulogy attached. However, the relevant video and pictures were later deleted by the two platforms. Reuters said that in response, Anwar posted on his social platform on August 1, "Let all this send a clear and unequivocal message to Meta - stop this cowardly behavior." Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi said on the same day that the Malaysian government has asked Meta to explain this.
Reuters said that Meta had previously designated Hamas as a "terrorist organization" and banned content praising the organization. In addition, the media said that the above incident was the second conflict between Meta and the Malaysian government in recent times. In May this year, the report on the meeting between Anwar and Haniyeh published by the Malaysian media was also deleted by Meta, but later restored. Meta also said at the time that it was "accidentally deleted."
According to Xinhua News Agency, Hamas Political Bureau leader Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran on July 30, while attending the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Massoud Pezerhicyan. Both the Iranian government and Hamas believe that the assassination was carried out by Israel. Israel has not publicly admitted to the assassination.
