Expensive works of art such as famous paintings are often the preferred targets of thieves. The largest art theft in history, the so-called Gardner Museum heist or the 1990 heist, involved the disappearance of 13 precious works of art and remains an unsolved mystery to this day.
Among these missing paintings are masterpieces by many masters, including Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, etc. Although some of the stolen paintings were eventually recovered and returned to their original owners, the whereabouts of many works remain a mystery.
