According to CNBC, John Schulman, co-founder of OpenAI, posted on X on Monday that he will leave and join rival artificial intelligence startup Anthropic. At the same time, Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI and a key figure in the company, said he will take a leave of absence until the end of this year.

The change comes less than three months after OpenAI disbanded its superalignment team, which focused on ensuring people can control AI systems that surpass human capabilities on many tasks, the report said.

According to Schulman's profile, he is the co-leader of OpenAI's post-training team, responsible for improving the artificial intelligence model of the ChatGPT chatbot and the programming interface for third-party developers. In June of this year, OpenAI said that Schulman, as the head of alignment science, will join the safety and security committee to provide advice to the board of directors. Schulman has been working at OpenAI since he received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley in 2016.

Schulman wrote in the X post that this choice stemmed from his desire to delve deeper into AI alignment, to be able to reengage in actual technical work, and to gain new perspectives at Anthropic.

He said his departure was not due to OpenAI's lack of support for new work in this area. "On the contrary, the company's leadership has been very committed to investing in this area."

“It’s a personal decision,” Schulman said.

Jan Leike, the leader of the Super Alignment team, and Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder of OpenAI, both left this year, according to CNBC. Leike joined Anthropic, while Sutskever said he was helping to start a new company, Safe Superintelligence Inc.

Since OpenAI employees founded Anthropic in 2021, the two young San Francisco-based companies have been competing to develop the most powerful generative AI models to generate human-like text, the report said.

Schulman and others left after the board ousted Sam Altman as CEO last November. Employees protested the decision, leading to the resignation of Sutskova and two other board members, Tasha McCauley and Helen Toner. Altman was subsequently reinstated, and OpenAI added board members.

The report mentioned that also on Monday local time, a company spokesperson said that OpenAI's other co-founder and president, Greg Brockman, announced that he would take leave for the rest of the year.
