Google recruits top talent from Character.AI and signs large-scale language model licensing agreement

IT Home reported on August 5 that startup Character.AI announced last Friday that it has signed an agreement with Google's parent company Alphabet, granting the search engine giant a non-exclusive license to use its large language model.

IT Home noticed that Character.AI co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas will return to Google. They were both former Google employees.

Character.AI said in a blog post,They will get more money through the agreement with GoogleThe company said it will acquire Character.AI for $1.5 billion, but did not disclose the amount. Dominic Perella, Character.AI’s general counsel, will serve as its interim CEO, effective immediately.

“We particularly welcome the return of Noam, a distinguished machine learning researcher, who will join the Google DeepMind research team along with a small number of colleagues,” a Google spokesperson said.

In March, Microsoft spent $650 million to hire the co-founders of artificial intelligence startup Inflection and dozens of their employees. In June, Amazon hired several co-founders and employees of another artificial intelligence startup, Adept.

Character.AI has previously raised $193 million in venture capital.
