Israel's foreign minister called on NATO to "expel Turkey" in protest against Turkish President Erdogan's threat to "send troops into Israel."

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday: “In light of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s threats to invade Israel and other dangerous rhetoric, Israeli Foreign Minister Katz has instructed his country’s diplomats ... to urgently contact all NATO member states, calling on them to condemn Turkey and demand its expulsion from the regional military alliance.”

Earlier, Erdogan strongly condemned Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. On July 29, Erdogan spoke at a meeting of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and said that Turkey "must be very strong so that Israel cannot do these ridiculous things to Palestine." He talked about Turkey's past military interventions: "Just like we entered Karabakh (Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed region between Azerbaijan and Armenia) and entered Libya, we may take similar actions against them."

He added: “There’s no reason why we shouldn’t do it.”

His statement triggered a strong reaction from Israel. Katz issued a statement in response, saying: "Erdogan is following in the footsteps of Saddam Hussein and threatening to attack Israel. He should remember what happened there and how it ended."

Katz also accused that "Hamas, which launches terrorist attacks on Israel, is headquartered in Turkey, and Turkey, along with Hamas, Hezbollah and the Yemeni Houthi armed forces, is a member of Iran's axis of evil."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the United States to provide military assistance to Israel in its fight against Hamas in a speech to Congress last week.

"The United States and Israel must stand together. When we stand together, it's simple: we win, they lose," he said.

Türkiye joined NATO in 1952 and has the second largest army in NATO.

NATO has no specific mechanism for suspending or expelling members, but members can withdraw voluntarily.

In 2021, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg denied the possibility of establishing an "expulsion" mechanism, saying it "will never happen."

Wilders, the far-right leader of the Netherlands, whose Freedom Party is currently the largest party in the Dutch House of Representatives, posted on social media on July 29 to criticize Erdogan and said that "Turkey should be kicked out of NATO."

Unlike Israel, the Netherlands is a member of NATO.

The Times of Israel reported on July 29 that Israel and Turkey "once" were close allies in the region, but relations between the two countries have been deteriorating over the past decade or so.

You know, Turkey was once Israel's closest country in the Middle East, and at one point Israel's Air Force training was conducted in Turkey.
