[Text/Observer Network Chen Sijia] "This is the first change in the White House senior team after Biden withdrew from the campaign." According to the New York Times on July 30, Anita Dunn, a senior adviser to US President Biden and planner of the 2020 campaign, will leave the White House next week and join the super political action committee supporting US Vice President Harris.

This is the first core member of Biden's team to leave office after Biden decided to withdraw from the 2024 US presidential election. Dunn said in a statement: "I am honored to serve in the White House with the president and the team. I thank President Biden and Vice President Harris for their leadership and for giving me the opportunity to participate in their contributions to the American people."

Dunn revealed that she will resign from her position in the White House next Tuesday (August 6) and provide consulting services to Future Forward, the largest super political action committee of the Democratic Party, as a senior adviser. The organization has announced its support for Harris to run in the 2024 US election and has pledged to invest $300 million to support Harris' campaign.

People familiar with the matter told The Washington Post that Dunn will work on Future Forward and coordinate with Harris' campaign.

Dunn is a senior Democrat who first entered the White House in 1978 and worked for then-US President Carter. She participated in former US President Obama's campaign in 2008 and 2012, and served as White House communications director in 2009. In 2015, Dunn provided campaign advice to Biden, but Biden decided to give up the 2016 US election at that time.

During the 2020 US presidential election, Dunn played a core role in Biden's team. The New York Times said that in the early stages of the election, Biden suffered an "embarrassing defeat" within the Democratic Party, but the campaign strategy formulated by Dunn ultimately helped Biden turn the tide and win the Democratic presidential nomination. Therefore, she is regarded as one of the important "contributors" to Biden's victory.

After Biden took office, Dunn began working in the White House in January 2021, serving in two temporary positions. In 2022, Dunn resigned from the Democratic consulting firm SKDK and officially served as a senior adviser to the US President. Since then, she has been responsible for overseeing White House communications, managing policy promotion, and providing advice to Biden's 2024 campaign.

In addition, Dunn's husband, Bob Bauer, is Biden's personal lawyer. He has served the Democratic Party for many years and served as White House legal counsel in the Obama administration.

Dunn has been criticized by some Democratic donors for Biden's poor performance in the first debate of the 2024 US presidential election last month. According to Reuters, John Morgan, a major Democratic donor, accused Dunn and the Balls of mistakes, saying that "their (debate) strategy was a disaster for Biden and a plus for Trump."

Morgan also said that Biden has been "fooled" by the couple's values. "They have to go. This deception is disgusting. This is political malfeasance."

But people familiar with the matter told the US media that Biden himself was not frustrated with the team's preparations, and he still trusted Dunn, Bauer and other staff members. Some Democrats also said that it was unfair to blame Biden's own mistakes on the team members, and they believed that this was a typical "hindsight" and anger-taking behavior.

Regarding the news that Dunn is about to leave the White House, Biden issued a statement on the 30th, saying: "She was a key member in helping us win the 2020 election and an indispensable member of the White House. She is strong and tested, and her experience and wisdom have helped us achieve historic results for the American people. I value her advice and friendship very much, and I will continue to rely on her help and insight in the next six months of my term."

Chauncey McLean, chairman of the Future Forward super PAC, said the group welcomed Dunn's joining.

Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 US presidential election on July 21 local time and will support Harris to continue his campaign as the Democratic presidential candidate. Harris' campaign team said on the 30th that Harris will hold her first rally with her running mate in Pennsylvania on August 6. Sources told Reuters that Harris is expected to announce her running mate as early as August 5.
