No one has claimed responsibility for the assassination, but analysts quickly suspected Israel, which had vowed to kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders, according to the Associated Press.

Iranian media reported that Haniyeh visited Tehran to meet with Iran's supreme leader and attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran's new president.

According to CCTV News, on July 31 local time, Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior member of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), told the media:Hamas is an institution and an ideology that will not be affected by the assassination of any leader. He said Hamas is waging an open war to liberate Jerusalem and is ready to pay any price.

According to CCTV News, Haniyeh was born in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip in 1963 and was once the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. After Hamas won the legislative council election in 2006, Haniyeh became prime minister. In January 2007, after a conflict between Hamas and the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah) led by Palestinian President Abbas, Abbas announced the removal of Haniyeh from the post of prime minister. In June 2007, Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip from Fatah by force.
