Apple today made the second beta of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 available to public beta testers, bringing the new software to the general public. The second public beta comes two weeks after Apple released the first public beta.

Public beta users who are enrolled in Apple's testing program can download the iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 updates by opening the Settings app, going to "General," tapping the "Software Update" section, and then selecting the iOS 18 Public Beta option.

iOS 18 introduces Apple Intelligence, artificial intelligence features deeply integrated into the operating system. Although not all features are available yet, it brings writing tools for rewriting, polishing, proofreading, and summarizing text across apps, as well as the ability to generate custom images using Image Playground. You can also generate custom emojis with the Genmoji feature, and Siri will also be completely revamped. Please note that Apple Intelligence is not yet available in the beta version.

In addition to the AI features (which will be limited to iPhone 15 Pro models and M-series iPads), iOS 18 also brings a redesigned home screen with the option to rearrange app icons and widgets with open spaces, as well as tint options and new dark colors for dark mode.

The Control Center has been revamped, with a new control gallery to pick the controls you want to put front and center. The Control Center has multiple pages, and users can group related controls and customize their sizes. As part of this update, the flashlight and camera icons on the lock screen can be swapped, and you can also choose Control Center options for the action buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro.

The Messages app supports SMS scheduling, the ability to use any emoji, the ability to send messages via satellite, the ability to use text effects for any word, phrase, or emoji, and the ability to choose formatting like bold and italics. For text messaging with Android users, Apple now supports RCS, which basically means you won’t have a problem sending pictures and files, plus you’ll be able to see typing indicators and read receipts, and send SMS over Wi-Fi.

Safari summarizes the web, and Photos has been completely redesigned to focus on showcasing your best photos. A dedicated Passwords app makes it easier to access saved passwords and logins, and you can now lock any app using Face ID or Touch ID.
