Over the past 30 years, the Internet has developed rapidly in China and has had a profound impact. Looking to the future, it is worth paying attention to how the Internet will evolve and how related technologies will be upgraded based on new economic and social needs.

On December 16, 2015, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out during his inspection of the "Light of the Internet" Expo in Wuzhen, Zhejiang: "The Internet is one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. It has brought tremendous changes to people's production and life, and has played a strong driving role in the innovation and development of many fields." 2024 will be the 30th anniversary of China's full-function access to the Internet. Over the past 30 years, the Internet has developed rapidly in China and has had a profound impact. Looking to the future, it is worth paying attention to how the Internet will evolve and how related technologies will be iteratively upgraded based on new economic and social needs.

The development of the Internet is a process of continuous innovation. Among them, the Internet Protocol is like a courier, responsible for the transmission and routing of data packets, and is an indispensable Internet technology. From local area networks to wide area networks to the global Internet, the Internet Protocol has been continuously evolving and enriched, enabling the Internet to adapt to previously unforeseen businesses and applications. Of course, innovation is a process of trial and error, and the development of the Internet Protocol has also taken detours. Taking the setting and management of Internet IP addresses, which are similar to ID card numbers, as an example, the fourth version of the Internet Protocol (IPv4) was officially defined in 1981, corresponding to 4.3 billion addresses. The design at that time was already quite generous, because the number of global Internet users at that time was far less than this number. However, due to a lack of long-term vision, address allocation faced a crisis of exhaustion in the early 1990s. Later, the sixth version of the Internet Protocol (IPv6), which has a large number of addresses and can "compile a URL for every grain of sand in the world", came into being and became a new solution to this problem.

Undoubtedly, IPv6 is an inevitable trend in the upgrading and evolution of the Internet and an important direction for network technology innovation. It is also the basic support for building a cyber power. For us, the "14th Five-Year Plan" period is an important strategic opportunity period for accelerating digital development, building a cyber power and a digital China. my country's IPv6 development is at a critical stage of overcoming difficulties and crossing the inflection point, facing the risk and challenge of not advancing or retreating. To promote large-scale deployment and application, it is necessary to build an evolutionary technology system, strengthen the evolutionary innovation industry foundation, accelerate the evolution and development of infrastructure, deepen industry integration and application, and enhance security assurance capabilities.

IPv6 is still somewhat unfamiliar to most ordinary users. In order to create a good atmosphere for the participation of the whole society, authoritative experts from the Internet, telecommunications, finance, water conservancy, oil and gas, electricity and other industries have jointly compiled the "Science and Technology Frontier Course: IPv6+" under the organization of the Expert Committee for Promoting the Large-Scale Deployment and Application of IPv6. This book introduces the background and current situation of the development of IPv6, focusing on the technical analysis of the innovation of "IPv6+", and combining the application practices of key industries to illustrate its positive contribution to social and economic development. The authors of each chapter have rich experience in research and development and international standardization, and some are technical supervisors and implementers of industry applications. The writing team integrates industry, academia, research and application, and gathers professional knowledge and industry experience in the book. The writing style also tries to consider the simplicity of popular science books to help ordinary readers understand IPv6 technology and its significance. For professional readers, facing the new issues of Internet development, the coping ideas elaborated by this book based on application examples are of inspirational value.

At present, the construction of a cyber power is constantly advancing, and many new areas are waiting to be explored. International standardization work related to "IPv6+" is starting, and full coverage of single-stack networks will take a long time, and innovation in programming space is still on the way... The vast world of innovation is waiting for more people of insight to display their talents and take on responsibilities.
