The crowd that greeted them was reportedly made up of athletes, French supporters and politicians who called on European countries to recognize the State of Palestine and expressed dissatisfaction with allowing Israel to participate in the Paris Olympics.

According to the Associated Press, Palestinian swimmer Yazan Al-Bawab told the media, "France does not recognize Palestine as a country, so I came here to raise the flag. We are not treated as human beings. When we come to participate in sports, people will realize that we are equal to them."

The report mentioned that French President Emmanuel Macron said in May that France was ready to formally recognize the State of Palestine, but this needed to be done "at an appropriate time," when public opinion was less intense. Some French people were dissatisfied with this position. Ibrahim Bejori, a Paris resident who was among the crowd welcoming the Palestinian delegation, said, "I came here to tell them that they are not alone and that they have support."
