Sam Altman, founder and CEO of OpenAI, has already praised the new AI search product: "Compared to traditional search products, I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like this (SearchGPT) and how quickly I adapt to it."

In an interview with The Verge, OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood mentioned that the source of SearchGPT's AI capabilities is GPT-4 - and friends who want to try it out have to be quick, as there are only 10,000 test spots for SearchGPT.

The main interface of SearchGPT is not much different from most AI search and conversation products on the market, such as Perplexity. The first thing users see is a prominent input box, where they can enter the desired question in natural language and get a structured answer.

It is worth mentioning that, unlike most AI searches that require precise word prompts, SearchGPT allows users to retain the habit of keyword search - this means that users do not need to organize their language, pay attention to grammar and letter case, and can directly enter fragmented keywords to retrieve the corresponding answers.

For example, if you want to know "music festivals held in Boone, North Carolina in August", just enter "music festival boone north carolina august" in the search box of SreachGPT, and you will get a list of music festivals returned, as well as a brief description of the event.

Click the "Link" button in the left column, or click the source link in the search answer, and the source of the information will be displayed on the screen. Below the "Link" button in the left sidebar, there is also a button called "Visual Answers", but OpenAI has not yet disclosed information about this feature to the outside world.

Based on contextual memory, users can conduct multiple rounds of follow-up questions like a conversation. For example, under the search topic of "the best tomatoes to grow in Minnesota", SearchGPT recommends suitable varieties based on the user's follow-up question "Which one can I grow now?"

Kayla Wood told The Verge that OpenAI is working with third-party partners and using their content directly to build search results, with the goal of eventually integrating search functionality into ChatGPT.

Judging from the official search demo, the third party that OpenAI seeks to cooperate with is not a search engine or browser, but news organizations, publishers, and creators who are direct content producers.

This also means that OpenAI's AI search products will compete directly with search giants such as Google and Microsoft Bing, as well as AI search newcomers such as Perplexity, which is valued at US$3 billion.
