Gokwa BorgGoxwa Borg, a Maltese female painter born in 1961, grew up near Strada Stretta, a narrow street in Valletta. Her father owned a nightclub called Metro, and her childhood memories are filled with music, laughter and the hustle and bustle of the street.

Her artistic journey began with a fascination with walls that bear witness to all of human joy, passion and ritual. Goxwa Borg’s artwork explores a variety of genres, but all with an element of mystery and intrigue.

Goxwa Borg began painting at a very young age and later attended St. Martin's School of Art and studied film at Emerson College in Boston. In 1993, she received a scholarship to the International School of Art in Paris and has exhibited her works in many cities including Paris, New York, Strasbourg and San Francisco. Goxwa Borg currently lives in Paris.

Her artistic style is a perfect combination of ancient tradition and modern sensibility. The wax-based oil painting medium she uses demands quick execution, as the pigment dries quickly. This medium provides a more solid-looking coating of paint, suggesting both the permanence of the wall and the fragility of what it decorates, and allows for a richness and liveliness of color that recalls both ancient Mediterranean art and modern Mediterranean landscapes.

Gokva Borg's work is characterized by dynamic color patterns that are both subtle and luxurious, down to earth and flying to unknown destinations, lively and serious. Her backgrounds are made of color spots and seemingly disordered scratches, from which figures, faces, trees, boats, fruit bowls, etc. emerge, sometimes cracked and splashed, but always solid, clear and individual.

They may be portraits of old friends or beloved cats that have passed away. They may be reminiscences of paintings in museums, Byzantine or Russian icons. But they all have a dual nature that is peculiar to this artist. They have their own independent history in the bustle of human life, and at the same time they wander in another eternal world where past, present and future are one.

Goxwa Borg's artwork is a modern interpretation of timeless art and her work attracts many admirers and collectors.
