apple has introduced a series of changes in the iphone 16 pro max, starting with the new and improved a18 pro, which is a significant improvement over the a17 pro in the iphone 15 pro max. however, in the latest speed test with the galaxy s24 ultra, the hardware upgrade didn't give apple's flagship much of an advantage. interestingly, we noticed that some apps behaved differently on android, giving it an advantage, as you'll soon find out.
even though the iphone 16 pro max is equipped with 8gb of memory, it still has excellent memory management capabilities that are on par with the galaxy s24 ultra.
samsung's high-end smartphone has been launched in january this year, which means that the galaxy s24 ultra will receive various updates to improve its performance, responsiveness and the speed at which apps open and close on the device. the iphone 16 pro max owned by the youtube channel phonebuff is running the ios 18 operating system, and so far the speed test results have mixed results. last year's phone 15 pro max narrowly beat the galaxy s24 ultra with inferior hardware.
in a recent test, we saw that the iphone 16 pro max maintained nearly identical speeds to the galaxy s24 ultra, opening apps and performing related tasks in quick succession. however, the speed difference first became apparent when running snapseed, with the galaxy s24 ultra outperforming the competition during the file export process, while at this stage the iphone 16 pro max outperformed the a18 pro most of the time in some gaming apps. both achieved a negligible lead, but it was still almost the same as the galaxy s24 ultra at the beginning of the test.
in the second round, both smartphones had all their apps running in the background and there were no performance glitches in between. this behavior suggests that samsung may have improved memory management on its galaxy s24 ultra, but it's still better on the iphone 16 pro max, and apple is rumored to debut a 12gb ram iphone in next year's iphone 17 series the performance of the 16 pro max is expected to be further improved. this means the iphone is no longer the speed test winner.
