tata's iphone factory in india is closed indefinitely due to a fire, and apple may have to redirect orders back to china to avoid production shortages. a fire broke out at tata's factory in tamil nadu, india (formerly owned by pegatron) on september 28, 2024, and has been extinguished. authorities initially said it was "unlikely" the plant would reopen soon, but now reports say it has been closed indefinitely due to extensive damage.

according to reuters, the factory produces iphone rear panels for tata and foxconn. tata officials have not yet commented on this, but counterpoint research estimates that the production shortfall may be as high as 15%.

this estimate is specifically for production of iphone 14 and iphone 15 models. the total equipment shortfall may be as high as 1.5 million units.

india is entering its peak festival season from october to early november. the impact is likely to be much smaller, though, as an unnamed source said apple typically has eight weeks of backplates in stock.

it would also give apple some time to allow its chinese suppliers to add a shift to existing production. chinese companies can also add new production lines to make up for the loss of tata factories.

it is unclear how the fire started, but it is said to have started in an area used to store chemicals.

in september 2023, an iphone factory of pegatron was paralyzed for several days due to a fire. earlier that year, another fire paralyzed lightning cable production in india.
