apple's affordable iphone se is about to undergo a major overhaul, with a fourth-generation model expected to be launched in spring 2025. the upcoming model will be significantly different from its predecessor, introducing many of the features of higher-end iphones while maintaining its status as the most affordable new model in apple's lineup.

according to recent reports, the iphone se 4 will have a similar design to the iphone 14, with a larger 6.1-inch oled display. this marks a significant increase in iphone se 4's screen size compared to the current model's 4.7-inch lcd screen and aligns display technology with apple's flagship devices.

the switch to oled displays is part of apple's broader strategy to phase out lcd displays across its entire iphone lineup. the shift will affect long-time suppliers such as jdi and sharp, which mainly provided lcd panels for previous se models.

in terms of performance, the iphone se 4 is rumored to be powered by the a18 chip, which debuted in the iphone 16 series last month. the device is also expected to switch from touch id to face id, marking the end of the iphone's physical home button.

other noteworthy upgrades include:

  • usb-c port, replacing lightning interface.

  • action button, a feature introduced when the iphone 15 pro was released.

  • apple designed its own 5g modem.

  • 48-megapixel rear camera, higher than the current 12-megapixel sensor.

  • 8gb of memory, double the 4gb of memory on the current model.

the increase in memory is particularly significant because it will enable the iphone se 4 to support apple's artificial intelligence (ai) features, which are expected to start rolling out in ios 18.1, released later this month. this would make the se 4 the most affordable iphone capable of running these advanced ai features (even last year's standard iphone 15 model couldn't do this).

despite these substantial upgrades, apple is expected to maintain the iphone se's status as the affordable option. bloomberg's mark gurman said the device will likely cost between $400 and $500, in line with previous models.

as for release time, multiple sources, including gurman and analyst ming-chi kuo, have pointed to a spring 2025 release. given that all previous iphone se models were released in march, a march 2025 release seems highly likely. according to reports, apple suppliers are preparing to start mass production in october this year, creating conditions for a release in early 2025.
