according to news released by the israeli prime minister’s office on the 29th local time, the israeli government has voted to approve the right-wing new hope party leader sa'ar to join the coalition government as minister-at-large.
sa'ar was a member of netanyahu's likud party and served as a lawmaker and minister. in 2020, he failed to challenge netanyahu's leadership of the likud group, announced his separation from the likud group, formed a new "new hope" party, and proposed to remove netanyahu, the then prime minister.
on october 7 last year, after a new round of palestinian-israeli conflict broke out, israel established an emergency coalition government, and the opposition party "national unity party" co-led by saar and gantz also joined the emergency government. in march of this year, he asked to join the wartime cabinet of the emergency government, but was rejected. saar announced his withdrawal from the "national unity party" and the emergency coalition government. he has since criticized the israeli government's war conduct in gaza and said he was willing to make "concessions" to build a right-wing bloc against netanyahu.
however, since august this year, israeli media have continuously reported that sa'ar and netanyahu have reached a political reconciliation and will lead their party to rejoin the current israeli government. sa'ar posted on september 21 that israeli prime minister netanyahu had invited him to serve as defense minister in order to incorporate his party into the ruling coalition, but due to the escalation of the situation in lebanon and israel, he gave up accepting the invitation.
