the national pipeline network group stated that the completion and commissioning of the pipeline will assist xinjiang’s oil and gas exploration and development and increase reserves and production, further unblock natural gas resources in the west, realize the transformation of xinjiang’s resource advantages, and enhance the overall gas transmission capacity of the west-east gas pipeline system. at the same time, it can also stably supply clean and high-quality natural gas to areas along the line, optimize the regional energy structure and improve the atmospheric environment.

the west-east gas pipeline system is china's earliest natural gas pipeline system with the largest pipeline transmission capacity. the current total annual transmission capacity is 77 billion cubic meters (hereinafter referred to as "100 million cubic meters"). among them, the fourth west-east gas pipeline is another energy strategic channel connecting central asia and china after the west-east gas pipeline one to three. the total length of the pipeline from turpan to ningxia zhongwei is approximately 3,340 kilometers. after the project is completed, it will operate jointly with the second and third lines of the west-east gas pipeline. by then, the annual transmission capacity of the west-east gas pipeline system will reach 100 billion cubic meters.

the fourth west-east gas pipeline project is constructed in sections. turpan-zhongwei is the core component of the fourth line project, with a total length of 1,745 kilometers, accounting for more than half of the total length of the fourth line project, passing through 17 counties in xinjiang, gansu, and ningxia provinces (autonomous regions). (city), the annual designed gas transmission capacity is 15 billion cubic meters, and it can reach 30 billion cubic meters after the increase in transmission and transformation. the construction of this section officially started on september 28, 2022. according to cctv news reports at that time, this section is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2024.
