biden announces nearly $8 billion in military aid to ukraine and expands f16 pilot training

according to the u.s. white house website, on september 26, before meeting with ukrainian president zelensky, u.s. president biden announced an increase in aid to ukraine, including nearly 8 billion us dollars in military aid, and the provision of an air defense system to expand training of ukrainian f-16 pilots includes support for training an additional 18 pilots next year.

according to a report on the us "defense news" website, regarding pilot training, ukrainian officials emphasized that us assistance is insufficient. however, ukraine lost an f-16 in an accident in late august that is still under investigation. soon after the accident, zelensky fired the commander of the ukrainian air force.

when announcing the assistance on the 26th, biden stated that he had directed the us department of defense to use all remaining security assistance funds before the end of his term. this is the dedicated funds for ukraine that the us congress has approved. as part of this effort, the department of defense will use remaining ukraine security assistance program funds through the end of the year.

biden also made$5.5 billion in presidential spending authorization, to ensure that this authorization does not expire and that this u.s. administration can make full use of the funds that congress has appropriated to provide ukraine with approved equipment and then replenish u.s. inventories.

biden says u.s. department of defense is about to announce passage of ukraine security assistance planprovide $2.4 billion in security assistance, which will provide ukraine with additional air defense, unmanned aerial systems and air-to-ground munitions, strengthen ukraine’s defense industrial base and support its maintenance and sustainment needs.
