global innovation index rises to 11th place

on september 26, the world intellectual property organization (wipo) released the "2024 global innovation index (gii)" in geneva, switzerland. the index shows that china ranks 11th among more than 130 economies and is the only middle-income economy among the top 30 in the global innovation index.

gii shows that china's performance in innovation output will be better than innovation input in 2024. china's innovation input ranks 23rd, a ranking higher than last year; innovation output ranks 7th, a ranking higher than last year. among the seven fields included in the global innovation index, china ranks highest in the fields of knowledge and technology output (3rd), infrastructure (5th) and business maturity (11th).

in the world's top 100 technology clusters, the number of clusters in china has increased this year from 24 last year, ranking among the top 100 for two consecutive years with the largest number of clusters (26). the united states follows closely behind with 20 clusters. china's top technology clusters are shenzhen-hong kong-guangzhou (second globally), followed by beijing (third), shanghai-suzhou (fifth) and nanjing (ninth).
