south korea's nuclear safety and security commission said in a statement on thursday that it approved an administrative penalty of up to 10.5 million won (it home note: currently about 55,356 yuan) based on its findings. an official said south korea's largest company may face further penalties for two other violations.
in may, two workers at samsung's plant in uiseong, about 40 kilometers south of seoul, were exposed to radiation levels far above the annual limit while performing maintenance work on equipment that analyzes silicon wafers. according to the statement, due to negligence by samsung's radiation safety team, a safety device that automatically shuts off radiation when the equipment door is opened was not activated.
samsung said it would cooperate with the investigation and provide support to the affected workers. the company also said it would do its utmost to prevent similar accidents from happening again.
