hard work makes dreams come true, and sweat creates glory. on september 25, in the "youth lecture hall·my motherland and i" ideological and political course online theme promotion and interactive guidance activities, feng zhe, a former member of the chinese national gymnastics team and olympic champion, shared with students the story of his more than 20 years of athletic career.
"in 2012, i followed the chinese national team to participate in the 2012 london olympics and won two gold medals in the men's gymnastics team and men's parallel bars. to be able to win these honors is not only the result of my personal dedication and hard work, but also inseparable from the people who helped and supported me along the way." feng zhe said.
the first person i want to thank is coach feng xiaolin from chengdu children’s amateur sports school.
at the age of four, feng zhe started learning gymnastics in kindergarten. he trained, competed, and won awards. after competing twice, feng zhe's enlightenment teacher asked him to invite his parents. at that time, feng zhe thought he had made a mistake again. it turned out that the coach thought he was very suitable for gymnastics and wanted to discuss with his parents whether he should take this professional path.
under the guidance of coach feng, feng zhe was selected for the sichuan provincial team at the age of 11, and the national team at the age of 16. in 2006, he won the parallel bars championship at the gymnastics world cup in shanghai. "it is because of coach feng's enlightenment and training that i can stand on the championship podium," feng zhe said.
the second person i want to thank is the national team coach wang hongwei.
in 2008, feng zhe was preparing for the beijing olympics. at that time, the gymnastics team was full of top athletes. feng zhe also trained hard to get a spot in the competition at home.
but when the official list of participants was announced, feng zhe was not selected. "this incident hit me hard, and i was in a very low mood. i didn't dare to watch the gymnastics competition at all. when i heard the olympic news broadcast in the car, i would quietly change the channel." feng zhe recalled.
after being enlightened and encouraged by the national team coach wang hongwei, feng zhe quickly cheered up and was the first to return to the team to prepare for the gymnastics world cup finals at the end of the year. every day, he repeatedly trained for the problems exposed in the previous trials, constantly improving the quality and stability of his movements. during the warm-up, feng zhe also deliberately chose a position facing the world champion list, hoping that his photo would appear here one day.
hard work pays off. in the gymnastics world cup finals held at the end of 2008, feng zhe successfully won the gold medal in men's parallel bars, becoming the second gymnastics world champion from sichuan and the first from chengdu.
the third person i want to thank is not one person, but a group of people.
feng zhe recalled that when he participated in the 2012 london olympics, his heartbeat quickened and his palms began to sweat as soon as he stepped into the competition venue. he tried to calm himself by taking deep breaths. but the more he told himself not to be nervous, the more nervous he became.
at the moment before the competition began, the five-star red flag flying in the stands and the passionate cheers of the chinese audience made him forget his nervousness temporarily, focus on every move, and enjoy the competition to the fullest. with the enthusiastic encouragement of the audience, feng zhe and his teammates successfully defended the men's team championship in one fell swoop, and then in the men's parallel bars final, he used a set of moves with an overall difficulty of 7.0, scored a high score of 15.966, and won the individual gold medal.
after retiring in 2017, feng zhe transformed from an athlete to a sports worker and also became a teacher. at the scene, feng zhe also talked about his wishes and future goals: "i will guide more children to love sports, integrate into sports, build strong bodies, and let more chinese teenagers carry this fighting spirit from the school playground to the world's arena, and continue to provide more professional talents for chinese competitive sports."
